My homeowner's insurance made me replace a perfectly good GE Geo Spring hybrid water heater in April 2026. I bought my first Geo Spring hybrid water heater in 2010 and NEVER had a problem. I changed the anode around 2023, drained it once (I have a softener and filter so the water was clear) and wasn't good about cleaning the filter. This new one is even more efficient and has a great app that tells you your daily energy cost, gallons of hot water available, status of anode, etc. This was the #2 rated model and much cheaper than the #1. It also has a feature that mixes hotter water into the stream at the source so it's supposed to supply 40% more water than the 50 gallon tank holds. The upfront cost is a lot, but it really is the way to go. I had a lot of trouble getting the hot water heater on my wi-fi so the app would work, but the tech support was great, but it took FOREVER to resolve the problem. It's only a month old, but I'm super happy with it.

I installed the new heat pump water heater about six weeks ago, it is having no problem keeping up with us with a temperature of 127 and in the "Turtle" mode. It is very efficient and took me about six hours to install, including re routing the furnace flue.

I purchased a 40 gallon 120 volt GeoSpring water heater that was installed January 27, 2026. The unit was defective upon arrival with the now infamous fan mis-alignment problem that has been reported numerous times. In other words the fan made a loud scraping noise as it came into contact with the shroud. GE set up a case that day and ordered a new fan and fan motor to be sent. This arrived two weeks later and a service call was arranged for the following week. The independent contracted tech was excellent and replaced the fan motor and fan. Unfortunately, this fan motor caused a circuit breaker to trip so it seems it has a short. More new parts were ordered.... Six weeks have gone by since the install... Today is March 13th and the parts have not arrived and my very expensive water is still operating in standard mode with no heat pump functionality. GE keeps closing the case and seems to have little interest in fixing the problem on this brand new unit. If you choose to purchase one of these units be sure you have a backup plan in place or you may be out of hot water for weeks!

Misleading Noise Claim-2-3x Louder than Advertised

The unit works well as a water heater. It heats efficiently, and features like the overheating mode for extra capacity are genuinely useful. But GE's noise claims are deceptive, and that's why I can't rate it highly. The published spec says 41 dBA ™" quiet-refrigerator territory, practically silent. That's exactly why I chose this over LG's competing model. In reality, the compressor runs at 55™60 dBA under normal operation. That's not catastrophic, but it's the difference between "you forget it's there" and "you can hear it through the floor." Mine sits in the basement, and we hear it clearly in the rooms above and throughout the rest of the basement level. When I escalated to GE's executive team, they told me that 41 dBA is only achievable at the compressor's lowest possible speed. There's no setting to force the unit to run quietly. If the system decides it needs more power ™" which is most of the time ™" it runs louder, and 55™60 dBA is what GE considers normal, non-defective operation. Think about what that means. It's like advertising a car at 60 MPG without mentioning the test was conducted at 40 MPH going downhill. Technically possible? Sure. Representative of how you'll actually use it? Not even close. Bottom line: If you're installing this in a garage or a mechanical room where noise doesn't matter, it's a solid water heater. But if proximity to living space is a factor in your decision ™" as it was in mine ™" do not trust the advertised noise rating. The number GE puts on the box describes a best-case scenario they know you'll rarely experience.

This is my second water heater of this model that I have purchased. Easy to install when replacing a previous electric non heat pump model, the base is larger so I had to cut a larger board to place on the existing water heater stand and it requires a larger drip pan. This model needs to be farther away from the wall compared to the previous one, so an extension to the cold and hot water lines is needed. The instructions explain that locating it far enough from the wall is required to permit taking off the cover when it needs servicing, but doesn't give very much input on the best way to orient for cooling the room it inhabits. My water heater is in my garage in central Texas and part of the reason I wanted a heat pump model was that it dehumidifies and air conditions the surrounding room. I turned my water heater so the discharge fan blows cool air at a 45 degree angle away from the wall.

Just installed the new heat pump water heater. The estimated electricity cost per year is $164. My previous electric water heater that I replaced was $550 per year. And I will get the Inflation Reduction Act tax rebate of 30% off the purchase price, so this will pay for itself very quickly. My water heater sits in an un air-conditioned workshop in Central Texas, where it is always hot and humid. So it saves me money AND dehumidifies and air-conditions my workshop. It's quiet, offers multiple settings for to adjust hot water capacity when company comes over to visit for the holidays or when I go on vacation.

6 years & zero problems - tons of cheap hot water

Not keen on fads - but it was on sale, so I gave it a try. 6 years later and I'm SO impressed with this 40 gallon water heater. Annual cost to use is almost nothing. Trouble free and extremely quiet. Love the anode rod replacement alarm - well water here eats everything, so reminder to replace is anode is a huge perk. Has digital read outs to monitor that are large enough to easily read. Offers variety of options in addition to heat pump setting, such as hybrid and regular electric - plus vacation mode where it can restart WH the day before you get home. Always enough hot water available and digital set of temperature simple. Perks: energy saving rebates were significant from electric provider - state and feds. Got more back than I paid for the unit on sale. I'm sorry I didn't buy one for the office in my shop. Installed myself and replaced the anode rod this time myself. Rod is a bit expensive - but worthwhile to have electronic monitoring for replacement. Love it would buy again...even at full price.

Just had it installed today and already love it. Made in America, obvious good quality of material and care in manufacturing, A great brand that I trust (and already own via my kitchen appliances). Was impressed with the flex capacity, the improved energy efficiency vs the next three nearest competing brands and the fact that I didn't need a different app to one I already had. Installation went quickly and easily. Like that the manual is comprehensive and that the unit included schematics and service information, it reminds me of the good old days like the 60s and 70s when things were built to be serviced and built to last. Can't wait to see the savings in my monthly power bill, and the side effect of air conditioning and dehumidifying my garage/workshop space. Would highly recommend this heater and the GE brand.

So far so good. Install went smoothly. The unit is running, the heat pump is on and it's very quiet, no louder than my garage fridge running. Connected it to the app. The app said it timed out but when I checked again it was connected to the app/on wifi so it may just have been because I connected it to the 2.4g network and I was on the 6g network.
